Resumo em outra língua: The objective of this work was to understand the influence of the power and assembling method of a furnace in the production of silicon carbide on a pilot scale. The study was based on tests in the pilot furnace of Saint-Gobain Ceramic Materials unit, located in Barbacena, Minas Gerais and on the characterization of the material produced in these tests. Three operations were carried out: standard test, high power test and test without walls. The samples produced in these operations were used to carry out chemical, mineralogical, thermal and physical analyzes, which included analysis of density, magnetic grain and friability. The test that presented the best results in relation to the quantity of material produced, material quality and lower specific consumption was the standard. The test without walls presented the smaller production, smaller percentage of SiC and greater specific consumption. The samples from the three operations presented moissanite, almandine, wadsleyta, quartz and cristobalite in their mineralogical composition. The presence of moissanite 6H which is usually more stable and is found in purer materials was identified in the standard test sample. Ringwoodite, a mineral that is formed under high pressures, was found only in the sample from the test without walls. Based on the thermograms, the standard, high power and the test without walls samples’ presented peaks in similar regions, although they presented different values in relation to the weight loss: 2.18%, 3.05%, and 6.26% , respectively. Regarding the physical analysis, both loose packing density and pycnometry indicated that the denser material was produced on the high power test and the less dense material was obtained on the standard test. The results showed that the sample with the largest amount of ferromagnetic material was from the standard test (0.054ppm) and that the material produced on the test without walls was considerably less friable than the materials from the other two tests.
