metadata.dc.description.abstracten: The relationship between risk and return is important in financial decision-making; however, the Brazilian market has historically featured high interest rates that distort this dynamic. Given this, the objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of risk and return for fixed income and equity investments in Brazil, examining whether the historical returns of the stock market offset the assumed volatility. The research was quantitative, descriptive, and explanatory in nature. The Market Fixed-Income Index (IRF-M) and the Bovespa Index (Ibovespa) were used as proxies, along with the CDI as the risk-free asset. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, the Sharpe Ratio, and nonparametric statistical robustness tests (Jarque-Bera, ARCH-LM, Wilcoxon, Levene, and Ledoit and Wolf), applied to the daily returns and premiums of the assets. The results showed that the IRF-M exhibited consistent growth, with higher average annual returns and cumulative returns, as well as a Sharpe Ratio that was statistically more efficient than that of the equity market. The classic theoretical premise in finance that higher risk tends to generate higher returns was not confirmed in this case. It was found that the Ibovespa required significantly greater tolerance for volatility from investors, especially, during sharp declines in systemic crises and did not deliver a higher premium. It can be concluded that the historically high level of the Selic rate in Brazil distorts the traditional trade-off between risk and return and makes investors’ preference for the safety of fixed-income securities a technical, rational strategy that has historically yielded the best returns in the country’s financial market.
