metadata.dc.description.abstracten: Intestinal parasitosis, whose etiological agents are helminths and protozoans, affect mainly underdeveloped regions, affecting the most vulnerable part of the population due to inadequate basic sanitation conditions. Therefore, it is one of the main causes of morbidity in Brazil, representing a serious public health problem. In view of this, the present study sought a better understanding of the epidemiology of helminthiasis in the municipalities of Ouro Preto and Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as it’s predisposing elements. Thus, the objective was to analyze the factors associated with the occurrence of intestinal helminths in the aforementioned municipalities, as well as characteristics such as sex, age, place of residence, and sanitation status of individuals who sought care in a private clinical analysis laboratory in the region. The methodology used consisted of calculating the results of parasitological stool examination (PSE) - (secondary data), during a period of approximately 12 months. Subsequently, these data were treated in Microsoft Office Excel (2013) software for tabulation and descriptive analysis. Fisher's exact test to verify the association between nominal variables (sex and parasitological stool examination - PSE) was performed in Jamovi software (version 2.2). As results, it was observed that of the total of 329 individuals who underwent the parasitological stool examination, there was a greater demand from women, in the age range of 19 to 50 years. Among the positive individuals, there were more men than women with the presence of intestinal helminths - the women being affected by Schistosoma mansoni. On the other hand, hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides and Strongyloides stercoralis infections only affected men. However, a statistically significant association between sex and PSE positivity could not be inferred (Fisher's exact test showed p value > 0.05). The municipality of Mariana covered the majority of the positive results, with many individuals not informing their neighborhood of residence. It was concluded that, with this study, a survey of the helminthiases present in the municipalities of Ouro Preto and Mariana was registered, which enabled a better understanding of the epidemiology of these diseases, allowing the development of possible prophylactic strategies.
