Through research developed in three phases by applying techniques of ethnographic observation, documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with podcasters, the aim of the study is to build a taxonomy of the set of media and digital competences that podcast makers acquire within this community and how the incorporation of such knowledge is produced. The results of our study show the existence of 7 competence categories that podcasters develop in their dialogical interaction with other members of the community: connectivist skills, tagging, code programming, web production, graphic design, social media management and video production. The strategies they implement to ac-quire these skills are trial and error, the review of third-party tutorials and peer-To-peer learning. These results prove the potential of communities of citizen media production as connected schools whose foundations of horizontal communication, permanent discussion and shared knowledge should be integrated by educational institutions. © 2021 Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca. However, there are no studies on specific populations that show us consumption trends, podcast preferences and types, consumption platforms and the importance of audio and video production elements. This exploratory quantitative analysis was carried out using a questionnaire survey of 112 undergraduate media students, and it was concluded that these young people mainly consume lifestyle podcasts, with a strong prevalence of cultural and comedy/ humour podcasts, but also news and information podcasts, which is expected because it’s their area of study. Among these young people there is also a strong appreciation of audiovisual content, particularly the sound and visual identity of the podcast. © 2024 Instituto de Comunicacao da NOVA. Meanwhile, human facial expression is a significant signal in conversation for intention and emotion estimation. In this paper, we introduce facial expressions in inferring speaking styles for agents in TTS applications, addressing the challenge of synthesizing speech with appropriate styles and emotions for conversation. We propose a multi-modal and multi-scale Transformer model utilizing visual and auditory features to infer styles in synthesized speech. Due to the insufficiency of publicly available visual-auditory conversational corpora, we establish a large-scale, high-quality multimodal dataset, Podcast, for this purpose. At the same time, in recent years there has been a significant growth of the podcast, a sound product in whose identity the visual features acquire a notable importance. This study focuses on the interaction between these two communication disciplines to analyze whether the visual quality of podcast covers conditions the preference of the public (both positively and negatively: that is, choice and discard). The methodology combines two techniques: an expert judgment of four graphic design professionals to evaluate the quality of the stimuli and a quantitative survey that shows 12 covers of the Podium Podcast platform. With a final sample of 186 participants, the research reveals three main conclusions: there is no significant correlation between the visual quality of the covers and the response of the subjects, except in the rejection of those clearly worst visual proposals; perception is conditioned by the confluence of multiple variables, such as the title or content of the program or its popularity, criteria that are more important than graphic design and help to understand the diversity of opinions; and, finally, there is a certain influence of the level of knowledge about visual communication on the appreciation of the graphic quality of the product. This requires them to engage with the scholarship of learning and teaching – not only do they need to keep abreast of recent educational developments, but also measure the successes of their teaching approaches and share their practice with others. This is no mean feat against a backdrop of increasing workloads and an evolving culture of performance. The growing challenge for Academic Developers is to effectively support staff in their scholarly practice, through the provision of high quality resources and events/sessions. In all cases, the material must be accessible, relevant, inspiring and applied – translating across disciplines, at scale. Yet, too often, we know that resources end up under-used and events suffer chronically poor attendance (Hains-Wesson and Curran, 2014; Woodley, Funk and Curran, 2013). The presentation will describe the process by which a College Academic Development Group (ADG) developed an innovative strategy to reach a wider audience for staff capacity building. Drawing on the literature on informal learning in the workplace (Boud 1999), we sought to use conversational storytelling as a mechanism for sharing, promoting and exploring teaching practices. We noted from the literature that an informal community of practice (CoP) that encouraged teaching staff to innovate and influence change via the sharing of teaching and learning stories among peers is a cost-effective sustainable model that could easily be adopted and promoted through social media such as, podcasts, blog posts, LinkedIn and Twitter micro-blogging on internet enabled devices (Lefoe and Myers, 2006; Hains-Wesson and Curran, 2014; Warr Pedersen, 2016). In February 2019, we launched a podcast series called Open Classrooms. In each episode, a member of staff talks about something new or interesting they are doing in their curriculum or classroom. To date, there have been 14 episodes, each made available as free, open resources via Soundcloud and iTunes, and the series has become establish as one of the College’s flagship Teaching and Learning resources. By capturing and publishing teachers’ stories in podcast format, we have successfully used accessible technology to enhance individuals’ teaching practice, professional profiles and catalyse social and cultural change in academic departments. The presenters will tell the story of Open Classrooms, drawing on audio-visual resources to give the audience a multi-perspective understanding of the project and its impact. We will include a description of the practical approaches we have taken to recruiting interviewees, preparing them for the conversation, recording, publishing and marketing/advertising. Data from our on-going evaluation work will be used to tell our emergent impact story, including formal intended outcomes as well as some of the more surprising benefits to individuals and school cultures. The major objective of this study is to analyze the development and impact of podcasts on effective advertising. The majority of the research concentrated on how podcasting evolved across various media, cultural, and advertising environments. This study examined the growing prominence of podcasts in media, their effect on conventional media, and their implications for ethical issues. It explores the expanding podcast business, from its beginnings in the early 2000s to its current position as a worldwide media in effect. The study deployed several previous research to conduct the qualitative analysis. The findings of the study indicated that the worldwide accessibility of podcasts can transcend linguistic and geographical breaks down. This study also sheds light on podcasts’ complex impact on advertising, media, and society. The work explores the production process for a MOOC lesson, encompassing activities such as video scripting, graphic design, podcast recording, slide presentation preparation, concept mapping, and the creation of interactive learning activities. The article presents the instrument used to evaluate students' perceptions of the AI-generated video resources, offering insights into the accessibility of creating avatars without the need for specialized equipment. With basic recording devices and adherence to guidelines like maintaining eye contact and minimizing background noise, users can achieve professional results. Furthermore, the work underscores the potential benefits of integrating AI-based tools in the development of MOOCs and large-scale course production. It is observed that the utilization of such technologies may lead to a more streamlined course creation process, with the first exploration indicating a possible reduction of preparation time by approximately 60%. Educommunicative Skills and Strategies Acquired by Independent Podcasters SO FONSECA-JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION LA Spanish DT Article DE Podcast community; Podcasting; Media literacy; Digital literacy; Transliteracy; New media AB Born in 2004, Spanish independent podcasting has managed to build an online community of communicators and users that can be regarded as an intermediate socialization mechanism that connects individual production with social connection. Through research developed in three phases by applying techniques of ethnographic observation, documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with podcasters, the aim of the study is to build a taxonomy of the set of media and digital competences that podcast makers acquire within this community and how the incorporation of such knowledge is produced. The results of our study show the existence of 7 competence categories that podcasters develop in their dialogical interaction with other members of the community: connectivist skills, tagging, code programming, web production, graphic design, social media management and video production. The strategies they implement to ac-quire these skills are trial and error, the review of third-party tutorials and peer-to-peer learning. These results prove the potential of communities of citizen media production as "connected schools" whose foundations of horizontal communication, permanent discussion and shared knowledge should be integrated by educational institutions. However, there are no studies on specific populations that show us consumption trends, pod- cast preferences and types, consumption platforms and the importance of audio and video production elements. This exploratory quantitative analysis was carried out using a questionnaire survey of 112 undergraduate media students, and it was concluded that these young people mainly consume lifestyle podcasts, with a strong prevalence of cultural and comedy/ humour podcasts, but also news and information podcasts, which is expected because it's their area of study. Among these young people there is also a strong appreciation of audiovisual content, particularlythe sound and visual identity of the podcast. The article presents the instrument used to evaluate students' perceptions of the AI-generated video resources, offering insights into the accessibility of creating avatars without the need for specialized equipment. With basic recording devices and adherence to guidelines like maintaining eye contact and minimizing background noise, users can achieve professional results. Furthermore, the work underscores the potential benefits of integrating AI-based tools in the development of MOOCs and large-scale course production. In the teaching-learning process the use of podcasts and subtitled videos can help to the study of the subjects, as the students can check their content at any moment and anywhere, even without Internet connection. Also, the idea is that anyone with visual or hearing impairments and also foreign students follow our classes without any problem, providing a recognition to the diversity of university students. The first day of class we offered the activity to the students of Nutrition and Analytical Chemistry I of the Degree of Pharmacy and Nutritional Status Indicators of the Degree of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. They had to create a subtitled video and its corresponding podcast in Spanish or any other foreign language with a duration of 5-7 minutes, using free software such as Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, or Screen-O-Matic to create and edit the videos, Dotsub or Youtube to add the subtitles to the videos or ePodcast Creator or EasyPodcast for the edition of the podcasts. One hundred and seven students participated in the proposed activity from the 198 registered in the subjects previously mentioned. Specifically, in Nutritional Status Indicators of the 17 registered students 16 participated in the activity (94.1%). In Analytical Chemistry I, from 105 registered students 65 voluntarily participated in the activity (61.9%) and in the Nutrition subject 26 of 76 students participated in the proposed activity (34.2%). All the students who participated in the activity finished it. A total of 23 videos and their corresponding podcasts were created. Specifically, 5 were created by the students in Nutritional Status Indicators subject, 13 in Analytical Chemistry I subject and 5 in Nutrition. Most of them were subtitled in Spanish, although in the Nutritional Status Indicators subject 2 videos were subtitled in English and 1 in German. The video subtitled in German was made with the help of an Erasmus student from Germany. A YouTube Channel was created for each subject and all the subtitled videos were uploaded on the corresponding YouTube Channel by the students. The podcasts were hosted on a free digital platform by the teachers of the different subjects (https://www.spreaker.com/home) . Finally, all subtitled videos and podcasts were uploaded on VALORNUT Research Group Website, in the menu "Nutriherramientas" (https://www.ucm.es/idinutricion/material-educativo), and they are available to anyone who enters to our website. In our opinion, the proposed activity was well accepted by the students showing very high interest on it. We would like to continue with this activity in future courses in order to create an audio-visual material bank to facilitate to the students the study of our subjects and to improve the recognition of the diversity of the universitary students that we have in our classes. Podcasts "exercise oral speech and aural comprehension" [6] and improve student motivation, collaboration, attention to accuracy, mixed-ability teaching and student confidence [2]. In this study, students were asked to view a Latino/Spanish movie in the target language and to write a movie review following specific guidelines that included writing a creative introduction, the cast of characters, a synopsis of the movie, and recommendations to potential viewers. The study analyzed student perceptions regarding their oral communication, written expression, and collaborative efforts. Pre- and post questionnaires were evaluated to determine student perceptions of the value of podcasting Spanish movie reviews as a form of developing linguistic accuracy in a Second Language. In general, students perceived that their abilities to write and to speak in the target language had improved after completing the podcast. However, not all groups enjoyed working collaboratively which leads to the recommendation to assign student groups carefully and to allow individual work as needed. Another recommendation would be to give students more technical preparation since only 5% of the student body was familiar with podcast technology. With this idea, the museum proposed to offer open lectures that we called Monday of Science. The goal of that event is to approach people to science, especially young students, through conferences offered by academics and researchers of different Universities and Investigation Institutes, about different topics from science, and with an interdisciplinary approach. The first stage started in August of 2005, during five months. In that period we offered thirteen lectures with subjects as the origin of the universe, cloning, microorganisms, cells, and other. A great number of high school students attended those conferences, who came interested in the content of the lectures. We must to mention that the researchers exposed the different topics in their conferences in a very clear way, accessible to all kind of public, so the result of this experience was very enriching for all of us, as far as the public requested to have a new cycle of conferences. We decided then to offer new lectures form February to May 2006 were we had the same success than the first time. In the first semester of 2010, we presented the 9th cycle of conferences and we recently publish the first printed memory that includes the full lectures of the two first cycles. We used to receive an average of 200 students from high school, mainly from the capital of the state, but also from different communities in Guanajuato. Nevertheless, is expensive to those last ones to come to the capital to attend the lectures, so we propose to take advance of the new technologies to raise young people interested in science. Multimedia contents allow reinforcing the education-learning process, transfers information, and let the user to explore and to experiment, since their visual resources are dynamic and innovating. The other reason to apply new technologies to this project is that actually the open learning and the distance learning has become an innovation where the space-time-distance between teacher and student does not exist as traditionally used. And is why we propose the using of alternative mass media products, as the use of cell phones and podcast as elements that support the profit of our goals, considering than in Mexico their use among students had become a tool that allows communicating in a synchronic and interactive way, supported by images and complete contents. At the same time, in recent years there has been a significant growth of the podcast, a sound product in whose identity the visual features acquire a notable importance. This study focuses on the interaction between these two communication disciplines to analyze whether the visual quality of podcast covers conditions the preference of the public (both positively and negatively: that is, choice and discard). The methodology combines two techniques: an expert judgment of four graphic design professionals to evaluate the quality of the stimuli and a quantitative survey that shows 12 covers of the Podium Podcast platform. With a final sample of 186 participants, the research reveals three main conclusions: there is no significant correlation between the visual quality of the covers and the response of the subjects, except in the rejection of those clearly worst visual proposals; perception is conditioned by the confluence of multiple variables, such as the title or content of the program or its popularity, criteria that are more important than graphic design and help to understand the diversity of opinions; and, finally, there is a certain influence of the level of knowledge about visual communication on the appreciation of the graphic quality of the product. At the same time, in recent years there has beena significant growth of the podcast, a sound product in whose identity the visual features acquire a notable importance. This study focuses on the interaction between these twocommunication disciplines to analyze whether the visual quality of podcast covers conditions the preference of the public (both positively and negatively: that is, choice and discard). The methodology combines two techniques: an expert judgment of four graphic design professionals to evaluate the quality of the stimuli and a quantitative survey that shows 12 covers of the Podium Podcast platform.
